The Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) has initiated a new pilot for sector-specific sustainability reporting standards aimed directly at the global food and beverage industry. The move follows the organization’s mid-2026 research indicating that while 43% of listed food and beverage companies currently utilize GRI frameworks, there is a distinct industry-wide need for more streamlined, sector-focused guidance.
The new standard pilot seeks to simplify reporting for agricultural and food processing businesses by tailoring disclosure metrics to the unique environmental and social impacts of the sector. By refining the double-materiality approach specifically for food systems, the GRI framework aims to help companies and investors more accurately measure supply chain impacts, natural resource usage, and overall sustainability performance.
GRI is currently inviting input from industry stakeholders to ensure the standard remains practical and valuable before broader implementation. This initiative represents GRI’s ongoing strategy to complement mandatory regulatory frameworks with voluntary, highly detailed sectoral reporting tools.
