New Zealand’s fuel prices rose again in April, adding further pressure to household and business energy costs, according to figures released by Stats NZ on Friday.
Petrol prices increased 12.6 percent from March, while diesel prices posted a much steeper monthly rise of 36.6 percent. The latest increase follows several months of upward movement in transport fuel costs.
Since February, petrol prices have climbed 33.6 percent, while diesel prices have almost doubled, rising 94.9 percent, Stats NZ prices and deflators spokesperson Nicola Growden said.
Compared with April 2025, petrol prices were 30.1 percent higher, and diesel prices surged 91.3 percent, highlighting the continued volatility in energy markets.
Other energy costs also moved higher during the month. Electricity prices rose 2.4 percent from March, while gas prices edged up 0.3 percent. On an annual basis, electricity was up 13.1 percent and gas rose 10.8 percent.
Food prices also increased, rising 2.6 percent year on year, mainly driven by higher prices for meat and prepared foods.
