GDIM Informs DRC Justice Minister Guillaume Ngefa on Remedial Measures for Leakage Incident, Emphasizing Dialogue and Legal Safeguards for Mining Sector
The purpose was to inform Guillaume Ngefa about the measures taken by the company following the incident involving the spill of effluent products from the settling basin of the company GDIM, which caused environmental damage in the Haut-Katanga province.
According to Me Donald Kabasele, legal counsel for the company, the Minister of Justice was briefed on the measures already implemented by the company to protect the surrounding populations.
“The Minister was able to note that the company has put in place various actions to limit pollution, including the construction of water boreholes and the distribution of drinking water to local communities. We showed the Minister the significant progress achieved,” he stated.
He further acknowledged the importance of ensuring a stable business climate.
“We informed the Minister of the challenges we face, including attempts at extortion by certain individuals organizing fictitious cases,” he added.
Regarding the position of the Minister of Justice, Me Donald Kabasele indicated that Guillaume Ngefa demonstrated attentive listening and expressed a desire to work toward an effective resolution of the issues raised, while ensuring legal security for major players in the mining sector.
By granting an audience to members of the company, Guillaume Ngefa prioritized dialogue between government authorities and actors in the mining sector, while underscoring the authorities' commitment to maintaining a transparent and equitable business climate.
