Air New Zealand is set to launch three new non-stop international services from Christchurch to Singapore, Tokyo and Perth from late October, in a move aimed at boosting connectivity and supporting economic growth across New Zealand’s South Island.
The expansion represents a major step up in international flying from Christchurch, the South Island’s largest city. The airline said the new routes have been made possible by the return of Boeing 787 aircraft to service following global engine maintenance disruptions, along with the arrival of additional aircraft.
The Christchurch-Singapore route is scheduled to begin on Oct. 28, followed by Christchurch-Tokyo on Nov. 28 and Christchurch-Perth on Nov. 30. The services remain subject to regulatory approval, with tickets going on sale on Wednesday.
Tourism and Hospitality Minister Louise Upston said the new air links would help strengthen trade, tourism and export access, while creating broader opportunities for the South Island through improved direct connections.
The announcement comes after Air New Zealand and Christchurch Airport signed a memorandum of understanding to coordinate long-term planning and network development. The partnership focuses on sustainable growth, better passenger experience and stronger international connectivity.
Air New Zealand Chief Executive Nikhil Ravishankar said the new routes would reconnect Christchurch directly with key global hubs and reshape the way international visitors travel to the region. Christchurch Airport Chief Executive Justin Watson described the expansion as a landmark moment for the South Island’s tourism, export sectors and wider economy.
